About Us

Our History

The Jenke family first settled in South Australia’s Barossa Valley in late 1854. As religious refugees from Germany, our ancestors found a place to practice their faith in what the locals call 'The Barossa.' Several generations of Jenkes have provided for their families by growing grapes, and selling them to other large wineries in the area. In 1989, Kym L. Jenke, the son of John Jenke and Lois Liersch of Bethany, took a leap of faith and produced the first estate grown wines, bottling them under the name Jenke Vineyards.
These first wines were produced in a neighbor’s shed. Soon thereafter, family and friends worked to restore the original settler’s cottage on the banks of the N. Para River, and created what is now the Jenke Vineyards Cellar Door. In the early 1990’s, the original barn was converted into the current winery building. Jenke Vineyards, the culmination of six generations of vignerons here in the Barossa Valley, is now a vibrant business producing nearly 5,000 cases of wine annually.
Over the past 29 years, Jenke Vineyards has received numerous awards from local, regional, and national wine shows. Primarily varietal wines, the Jenke portfolio has received praise and accolades for many different wines, from the traditional Barossa Shiraz, Grenache and Cabernet Sauvignon, to rare varietal wines like Mouvedre and Cabernet Franc. Kym Jenke also received many awards for his dry white wines, including Chardonnay and Semillon. His 2002 Jenke Vineyards Semillon, was named the “Wine of the Year” by the Hyatt/Advertiser Wine Show in 2006.
